The really good news this week is that Woking has succeeded in its bid to become a Cycling Demonstration Town.  This will bring £1.8m over the next 3 years to develop cycling in the town.  We have arranged to meet Surrey County Council officers on 23 July to talk about how we would like to see this money being spent.  Contact us to have your say.  see here.

The improvement work on the Basingstoke Canal towpath has begun – see here

Our summer 2008 newsletter should now have been delivered to all our members, if you have not received one please let us know.

Please feed back to me at iankwright@hotmail.com if you feel there is useful information that could be included on our website or if you spot errors on any of the pages.  We are now doing our best to keep it up to date.

We are a voluntary group of local residents of all ages who use bicycles for transport and leisure. We believe that the bicycle has an important role to play in creating a healthier, cleaner and safer environment. Our aim is to further the interests of cyclists and other vulnerable road users in and around Woking. We are affiliated to Woking’s Local Agenda 21 initiative, taking part in one of the most important initiatives to result from the "Earth Summit" held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Since our group was founded in 1994, we have:

  • Consulted members and the local community
  • Published a regular newsletter for members
  • Held regular membership meetings to consult and inform
  • Contributed to the Woking Cycle Study
  • Lobbied for improved cycle facilities
  • Submitted comments for the government’s Integrated Transport Policy
  • Supported Woking’s Local Agenda 21 initiative
  • Supported the Bikeathon, National Cycling Week and the Woking Carnival
  • Devised and published leisure rides around Woking
  • Organised group bike rides
  • Run cycle training classes for adults
  • Run cycle maintenance classes
  • Created this web site!

Interested in old bicycles? A more recent addition to the attractions at Brooklands Museum is the Raleigh Cycle Display, charting the history of the famous company from it’s humble beginnings in 1886 right up to the present day with a unique collection of bicycles, accessories and posters. There’s a long history of cycle racing at Brooklands and Raleigh was there winning races right from the start!
