Off-road rides for families with children

We are very lucky in the Woking area to have a huge choice of cycling opportunities.

Goldsworth Park LakeFor families with children, depending on their ages, there are a number of options that you might like to explore.  If your children are between about 5 and 10, then you might like to try places such as Woking Park and Goldsworth Park Lake.  Both have other attractions to keep children interested (pond or lake and playgrounds with swings, etc).  Goldsworth Park Lake is ideal because of the extensive network of paths that can be explored in the vicinity and it also has a BMX track.  The Recreation Ground at St Johns is also very good for young children with bikes because you can cycle traffic-free to a narrow footbridge over the railway track and watch the trains pass underneath.

For slightly older children, the Basingstoke Canal is a good option.  You can go as far as you like in either direction and there is much to discover, including the Canal Visitor Centre just south of Deepcut and, in the summer months, a wonderful miniature railway also very close to Deepcut.   In the other direction, you can cycle along the towpath to Walton-on-Thames, Hampton Court and Kingston.  You can even cycle off-road as far as Putney!  By taking a right turn when you reach the River Wey Navigation you can cycle off-road to Guildford.

Again for slightly older children, much of the common land in the Borough is ideal for mountain biking - including Horsell Common, Chobham Common and Sheets Heath Common.  There is also a very good track that goes all the way round the spectacular Westend Common military land.

For parents with young teenagers, if you are prepared to use short sections of minor country lanes, the extensive network of public bridle paths provides an almost limitless choice of rides.

The Ordnance Survey maps of the area are invaluable for finding suitable nearby routes - either the Landranger 186 or the more detailed Explorer 145.

Cycleway Sign

Surrey County Council has added a Woking Link to the signposted Surrey Cycleway, which gives you the chance to explore some of the most beautiful and tranquil parts of southern Surrey by bike.  The route uses quiet country roads and lanes and is well sign-posted.  As well as showing the way, these signs also alert motorists that cyclists share the road.  The signs are brown - the same as tourist attraction signs.  For further information and a free map, fill in a Request Form on the SCC Web Site or contact the Surrey Tourism Unit, Surrey County Council,  County Hall, Kingston, KT1 2DT - Tel 0181 541 8090.
