Town Centre Routes

Although as long ago as 1998 Woking Borough Council approved proposals for routes through the town centre to connect up the radial routes of the proposed Primary Network, nothing much has happened to put these proposals into effect. The routes that were proposed are set out below and have proved to be rather optimistic with the dates shown for implementation.

The good news from the recent (January 2008) meeting of the Woking Cycle Forum is that introducing cycle routes through Woking town centre is once more back on the agenda and the original information has been updated with what we have learned so far. More information on this should follow in the next few months.

The Martian

On the North/South Route to Woking Station, cyclists entering the town at the new surface level crossing of Victoria Way will be able to continue straight on into the horse-shoe part of Chobham Road, through Crown Passage, past the Martian and onward to the junction with Chertsey Road near Macdonalds. The 2008 proposals then take this route via Addison Road and Locke Way to the Broadway and the station.

North/South trips have also been considerably eased at Victoria Arch, where cycle lanes have been provided in each direction. This has also improved safety for pedestrians, a number of whom had previously been struck by vehicles whilst walking along the footway at this location.

In the 2008 proposals, an East/West Route will use a new Toucan crossing of Victoria Way to reach the Market Square and then cross this to reach the High Street.

Brook House Roundabout – Chertsey Road – Going north out of the town on the Chertsey Road, a marked cycle lane has been provided in the centre of the road to the roundabout, with a slip road to Victoria Way on the inside. Cyclists can also join a dual-use cycle/pedestrian track on their left from Chobham Road along the north side of Victoria Way to Chertsey Road. There is also a short cycle cut through at Brook House on the eastern side of Chertsey Road to take cycles going south into the town.
