Deepcut Landslip (July 09)
Ultimate responsibility for maintaining the Surrey section of the canal, including the towpath, rests with Surrey County Council as the landowner. However, responsibility for day to day maintenance is delegated to the Basingstoke Canal Authority, which is jointly funded by Surrey and Hampshire County Councils and the riparian District and Borough Councils and managed through a Joint Management Committee.
I have only recently taken over responsibility for the canal, but I understand that the delay in reopening the towpath has been blamed on a lack of funding. The work required is in three parts - repair of the landslip, which SCC is managing in house; bank protection, which the BCA are responsible for; and resurfacing of the towpath, which it is likely we will also manage.
Funding is in place for the landslip repair, so this work can go ahead as soon as we can mobilise our contractor. I have asked the Canal Director to obtain quotes for the bank protection works and I hope that he will in a position to instruct these works shortly. As soon as the bank protection works are complete, we will be able to resurface the towpath and it will then be reopened.

A new link path has been laid at Woodlands Park, but there has been a complaint and we may need to modify this link to address their concerns.
The following works are scheduled for the next few days:
